Understanding The Shock Event as a tool . . . from Prof. Heather Richardson

"I don't like to talk about politics on Facebook-- political history is my job, after all, and you are my friends-- but there is an important non-partisan point to make today.
What Bannon
is doing, most dramatically with last night's ban on immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries-- is creating what is known as a "shock event."
Such an event is unexpected and confusing and throws a society into chaos  READ THE POSTING

The leaks from the  White House cast the president as a clueless child

Picture
All White Houses leak. Sometimes the leaks are big, sometimes small. But there are always people willing to talk to reporters about the “real” story or about why the chief executive made a mistake in regard to some decision he made. That said, I've never seen so much leaking so quickly — and with such disdain for the president — as I have in the first six days of Donald Trump's presidency.
Two recent examples: Read the article

The Character of the 'president'

Character counts. It ripples from the top down. The current 'leader' of the free world is so far off the radar, so lacking the kind of character, personality, intelligence, grace, eloquence, empathy, experience or patience for the job that it defies reason. Bullying was recently a big issue for schools. Now it is behavior that is displayed at the very top.
Lying was always taught to be wrong. Basic. We called it fibbing.

Now lies happen everyday and the lies will be denied.
It becomes dizzying.
Here are a few articles worth reading to cope with this alternate realit
y.

1. Trump's Ghostwriter Tell All
Essential Reading
“I put lipstick on a pig,” Tony Schwartz, the ghostwriter, says. He feels “deep remorse. Last June, as dusk fell outside Tony Schwartz’s sprawling house, on a leafy back road in Riverdale, New York, he pulled out his laptop and caught up with the day’s big news: Donald J. Trump had declared his candidacy for President. As Schwartz watched a video of the speech, he began to feel personally implicated.

2. Richard Branson Describes "Bizarre" Lunch -
Donald Trump Waxed About Revenge

"What concerns me most...is his vindictive streak."As our own David Corn noted just this week, Donald Trump loves nothing more than seeking cold revenge. It turns out billionaire Richard Branson has a Trump story that illustrates Trump's obsession with vengeance perfectly.

ESQUIRE MAGAZINE

I think it's time for someone to hire a deprogrammer for Sean Spicer. I don't think the cult he joined is very good for him. Over the weekend, of course, he pretty much melted down over the issue of how many people didn't show up for the inauguration of the president*. Then, on Monday, he held a briefing that looked far less like someone having a nervous breakdown and was praised fulsomely by some Washington journalists who must never be allowed to go out in public carrying their own money ever again.
Spicer was back behind the big podium again on Tuesday, and he was asked about the craven lie that his boss is spreading

Trump Aides Keep Leak Stories - He Can’t Handle Embarrassment

By Eric Levitz
No, you’re the baby.
That same day, some Trump aides provided the New York Times with a portrait of the president as a moody adolescent. The president is a 70-year-old child whose TV time must be closely monitored — because any news story that upsets his ego will trigger a temper tantrum followed by irrational demands that his indulgent, overwhelmed guardians will be helpless to refuse.
Or so Donald Trump’s aides keep confiding to the nearest available reporter.
On Sunday, one of the president’s confidantes told Politico that his staffers have to “control information that may infuriate him,” a task made difficult by the fact that the leader of the free world “gets bored and likes to watch TV.”  READ MORE

Trump 'compromising' claims: How and why did we get here?By Paul WoodBBC News, Washington
Donald Trump has described as "fake news" allegations published in some media that his election team colluded with Russia - and that Russia held compromising material about his private life. The BBC's Paul Wood saw the allegations before the election, and reports on the fallout now they have come to light.
